RECALL: Minced Crab Meat Pulled for Potential Salmonella Contamination

Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary W. Black is alerting Georgians to the recall of select lots of minced crab meat produced by Rome Packing Co. of East Providence, RI.

Routine sampling led to the discovery that some of the finished products could contain  Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria is an organism that can cause foodborne illness in a person that eats an item contaminated with it. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches and gastrointestinal issues such as nausea and diarrhea. The illness primarily affects pregnant women and adults with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill.

The list of recalled products includes:

• Ocean's Catch Crab Meat, six-ounce tubs with lot number 101366 and sell-by date May 14, 2014
• Ocean's Catch Crab Meat, six-ounce tubs with lot number 101507 and sell-by date May 20, 2014
• Ocean's Catch Crab Meat, six-ounce tubs with lot number 101540 and sell-by date May 21, 2014
• Ocean's Catch All Natural Jonah Crab Combo Meat, eight-ounce tubs with lot number 101372 and sell-by date May 14, 2014
• Ocean's Catch All Natural Jonah Crab Combo Meat, eight-ounce tubs with lot number 101432 and sell-by date May 19, 2014
• Ocean's Catch All Natural Jonah Crab Combo Meat, eight-ounce tubs with lot number 101474 and sell-by date May 20, 2014
• Ocean's Catch All Natural Jonah Crab Combo Meat, 16-ounce tubs with lot number 101372 and sell-by date May 14, 2014
• Ocean's Catch All Natural Jonah Crab Combo Meat, 16-ounce tubs with lot number 101391 and sell-by date May 16, 2014
• Ocean's Catch All Natural Jonah Crab Combo Meat, 16-ounce tubs with lot number 101407 and sell-by date May 16, 2014
• Ocean's Catch All Natural Jonah Crab Combo Meat, 16-ounce tubs with lot number 101432 and sell-by date May 19, 2014
• Ocean's Catch All Natural Jonah Crab Combo Meat, 16-ounce tubs with lot number 101474 and sell-by date May 20, 2014
• Ocean's Catch All Natural Jonah Crab Combo Meat, 16-ounce tubs with lot number 101539 and sell-by date May 21, 2014

The products were distributed nationwide to stores including Shaws Supermarkets, Market Basket and Dave's Market. No illnesses have been reported to date. Consumers who believe they may have become ill after eating these products should contact their health care providers.  Georgia Department of Agriculture inspectors will be checking to make sure the recalled products are removed from sale. Consumers who have the recalled products are asked to return them to the place of purchase for a refund or discard them.
