Routine sampling by the US Food and Drug Administration revealed the products could contain Salmonella. Salmonella is a bacterium known to cause salmonellosis in humans and animals. Symptoms of salmonellosis include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. In some cases, they are known to be severe enough to require hospitalization and can cause serious complications or death in young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.
The products were distributed nationwide after March 11, 2014, and were sold through grocery, food service and other retail outlets.
The affected products are as follows:
- Shurfine Macadamia Diced Nuts, five-ounce packages with the UPC code 0 15400 86635 4 and best by dates of March 11, 2015, June 23, 2015, and Aug. 11, 2015
- Western Family Macadamia Diced Nuts, five-ounce packages with the UPC code 0 15400 16635 5 and best by dates of March 11, 2015, June 23, 2015, Aug. 11, 2015, and Oct. 6, 2015
- HyVee Macadamia nuts, two-ounce packages with the UPC code 0 75450 13287 8 and best by dates of Aug. 27, 2015, Aug. 28, 2015 ,and Oct. 10, 2015
- Market Pantry Chopped Macadamia nuts, 2.25-ounce packages with the UPC code 0 85239 52108 3 and best by dates of April 28, 2015, May 1, 2015, May 28, 2015, July 1, 2015, July 23, 2015, Aug. 21, 2015, and Oct. 16, 2015
- Pear’s Gourmet Macadamia Nuts Raw, 16-ounce packages with the UPC code 0 75049 42186 4 and a best by date of July 23, 2015
- Cash-Wa Distributing Macadamia Nuts Raw, five-pound packages with the UPC code 0 75049 42186 4 and lot numbers 14170 or 14261
- Pegler Sysco Macadamia Nuts Raw, five-pound packages with the lot numbers 14052, 14094, 14128, 14181 and 14267
- Mayan Gold Macadamia Nuts Style #5, 25-pound packages available in bulk case, with the PO number 0011766 SDC 0034
Georgia Department of Agriculture inspectors will be checking to make sure the recalled products are removed from sale. Consumers who purchased these products are asked not to consume them, but can return the product to the store of purchase for full refund or exchange.
