RECALL: Smoked Salmon Recalled for Possible Health Risk

Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary W. Black is alerting Georgians to the recall of select lots of smoked salmon produced by Vita Food Products, Inc., of Chicago, Ill.

Routine testing by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services found that one lot of the salmon product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria is an organism that can cause foodborne illness in a person that eats an item contaminated with it. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches and gastrointestinal issues such as nausea and diarrhea. The illness primarily affects pregnant women and adults with weakened immune systems. Most healthy adults and children rarely become seriously ill.

The product was distributed in Hannaford, H-E-B and Publix stores throughout the country starting on April 7, 2014. No confirmed illnesses or complaints  have been reported to-date.

The affected lot is Vita Classic Premium Sliced Smoked Atlantic Salmon, four-ounce packages with a sell-by date of Aug. 17, 2014, and lot number 00764B.

Georgia Department of Agriculture inspectors will be checking to make sure the recalled products are removed from sale. Consumers who purchased the product are urged not to eat it. Refunds can be requested by mailing the product label or a copy of the receipt to:
Vita Food Products, Inc.
